STEM in Multiple Languages
Supporting Multilingual Learners in Early Education
How do young children make sense of the world when they use more than one language? And how can we, as educators, make sure our STEM experiences honor and build upon that incredible linguistic richness?
In our next Preschool STEM workshop, we will explore how to create STEM learning environments that celebrate multilingualism—not as a barrier, but as a strength. Together, we’ll dive into practical strategies that help children investigate, communicate, and make meaning across languages through science, technology, engineering, and math.
We’re thrilled to welcome Liria Caesar (Author of our Popcorn Problems , a classroom educator from Passaic, New Jersey, as our workshop facilitator! With over 20 years of teaching experience, Liria brings deep expertise in supporting multilingual learners through play, inquiry, and everyday classroom moments. She works with multilingual children every day and is passionate about helping educators recognize the many ways children express their STEM thinking—no matter the language.
What We’ll Explore
STEM as a language of curiosity: How play, observation, and problem-solving can bridge linguistic differences
Everyday talk that grows big ideas: Supporting vocabulary and conceptual understanding
Inclusive provocations: Using materials, visuals, and experiences to connect STEM ideas to home languages and cultures
Family partnerships: Simple ways to invite families to share words, stories, and experiences that enrich classroom investigations
Why It Matters
Multilingual children bring powerful ways of thinking into our classrooms—flexibility, perspective-taking, and pattern recognition—that are at the heart of STEM learning. When educators recognize and nurture those strengths, we don’t just teach about science or math. We teach children that their voices, in every language, belong in STEM.
